Coalition Partner Update # 6

Building Partnership & Coalition

SafeBR continues to grow! We are asking you to forward this update to 5 individuals or organizations and encourage them to join the movement to create the safest city in Louisiana. Every Baton Rouge citizen committed to this vision can join online at safebr.org/join

May 10th Partner Meeting:

Thanks to The Executive Center, Mr. Perry Franklin, and everyone who attended yesterday’s in-person Community Safety Partner Meeting. The presentation was insightful and there were great questions asked by so many. If you have any additional questions or need any additional information that we have access to share, please email info@safebr.org. More information related to the data shared will be distributed when the work is complete.

Meeting Snapshot:

Overall, it’s been a fast-moving first quarter for SafeBR! We celebrated the progress of Page/Rice and over 30 cameras purchased and/or placed already in the community. Clay Young provided a deeper overview of the Inspiration Center and the groundbreaking that took place at Howell Park. Adam Knapp gave an update on the work of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber that has championed HB556. A bill to address and create standards for the ankle monitoring program that has made its way through the LA Legislature.

Rhett Morris, of Common Good Labs, reviewed data produced with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation around the long-term trends and impacts of homicide and violent crime in our community. District Attorney Hillar Moore shared his thoughts on projects that are working and echoed the DA’s Office support of SafeBR. The insights we continue to gain are informing our working groups for both placements of new law enforcement assets and community-based investments.

Fundraising & Support:

SafeBR is resourcing a 3-year funding strategy to leverage $65M toward the 3 Pillars of focus (~$50M in public funding and $15M in private investment). To date, we have identified over $7.5M for SafeBR and urge supporters to visit safebr.org/support to contribute.

As mentioned yesterday, the LSU Interfraternity Council and their Greek Life partners held a crawfish boil fundraiser in support of the BRAF Community Safety Impact Fund. Christopher Schmidt, Vice President of Philanthropy, and IFC leadership presented BRAC President/CEO Chris Meyer with a check for more than $28,000 yesterday! We’re so thankful to Christopher for his leadership and proud of these LSU leaders for their interest and commitment to campus and community safety. These students are living examples of what we believe to be true: anyone can be a philanthropist!
